What is a Virtual Assistant?

A Virtual Assistant (VA) is an independent professional contractor, providing administrative, technical and sometimes creative assistance to clients – usually other independent entrepreneurs and small/medium businesses. VA’s generally work from their own office, hence the term ‘virtual’.

In this technological age, so much can be done in a virtual manner, predominantly via telephone, email, FTP and IM, and of course fax, snail mail and courier. As a result, it is quite common that a client never actually meets their VA.

The VA industry is one of the most rapidly growing industries in the world, as more and more businesses realise the significant cost advantage of using a VA to manage their day-to-day administrative tasks. They are saving time and money, allowing them to concentrate entirely on their core business.

A VA is more economical than hiring temporary staff, as a VA can be hired on an hourly basis. Also, because a VA is a self-employed professional, they take care of their own facilities, equipment, software, training, insurance and taxation. You don’t need to worry about anything except growing your business and focussing on what you do best!
